Historic building at University of Alabama could be moved

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? One of the oldest buildings on the University of Alabama campus may be moved to make way for a new dining hall.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that university officials are in talks with a buyer for the Kilgore House, a Queen Anne-style home built for Bryce Hospital's first engineer in 1890.

Historic preservation groups want the university to leave the house where it is.

University spokeswoman Cathy Andreen said she could not discuss the potential buyer. But she said current plans call for moving the building.

The director of the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation, David Schneider, said the best outcome would be to leave the building where it is. He said the worst-case scenario would be demolition. He said moving a building can be expensive and difficult.
