For a long time, when it came to shopping for my kids, my main goal was to get the most bang for my buck. I admit I didn?t pay a whole lot of attention to the value the toy provided.
Big box stores.
Clearance prices.
Quantity was the focus over quality.
But as my kids get older, and I?ve seen toy after toy get used a few times then tossed in the corner, I have come to realize that maybe I have been going about this all wrong. I couldn?t put my finger on exactly what was wrong, but I felt like something was missing. They may have had all the toys they saw in TV commercials, but they weren?t playing with them.
Why don?t they play with their toys?
It hit me like lightning just the other day. We were out shopping at the mall with my son, and with all the mainstream stores, gadgets, electronics, toys, etc. he asked to go to the bookstore and get a book. Not a toy. Not a video game. A book. In fact, he asked for 3 books and had a list of others he wants next time.
What makes an 8 year old boy want a book over a video game? What does that book offer the game doesn?t? What does this say about his developmental needs?
Prior to this experience with my son, my daughter and I had gone into a craft store. I couldn?t get her out. She wanted to leave with one of every item they had that was designed to be painted. She is 4 and would rather paint than play with the 500 toys she has in her room.
Change the way we buy toys.
Now, don?t get me wrong. I?m not saying that toys are bad. I am saying, however, that many mainstream toys don?t engage kids to the core of their development ? and it?s those toys that get cast aside quickly after they have outlived their immediate usefulness. But there are toys out there that capture a child?s imagination, expand their creativity, challenge their minds ? and keep them coming back for more. Boogie Board
The Boogie Board is an LCD writing tablet that kids can write one, erase and write again. Almost like a modern day mini chalk board. It is for ages 8+ plus my almost 5 year old adores it. She will draw on it constantly, and we often challenge each other to Pictionary with it. Although Abby doesn?t quite get the idea. Her drawings often include multiple elements that making guessing what is going on in one or two words next to impossible, but it is priceless to hear her explain her drawings.
