A pair of siblings, ages 21 and 19, were shot while walking in the 4300 block of Washington Avenue on Tuesday about 3:30 p.m.,? according to the New Orleans Police Department. Bullets struck one of them in the leg and the other in the hand, and they went to a hospital for treatment of their wounds, police said.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office issued a statement later in the day saying that the 21-year-old victim, Kerwinell Singleton, was wearing an electronic monitor on his ankle. The monitoring device was operating properly, the Sheriff's Office said. When he was shot, Singleton was within the geographic boundaries that the Criminal District Court had restricted him to, the statement from Gusman's office noted. Also, the shooting happened before Singleton's mandated 6 p.m. curfew.
Singleton is being monitored while he is awaiting trial in connection with the carjacking of a Lower Garden District man in September 2011; the sheriff said Singleton has been wearing the monitoring device without incident since February. Prosecutors say Singleton and co-defendant Ray Allen, 19, stole a man's keys at gunpoint in the 1400 block of Terpsichore Street, hopped into the man's 2001 Subaru Forester and sped away. Police arrested both suspects soon afterward.
Allen, who reportedly held the handgun used in the carjacking, pleaded guilty last month and received a 10-year prison sentence, records show. When Allen committed the crime, he was wearing an ankle monitor because of an unrelated simple burglary arrest, police have said.
Singleton's trial is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 5. Investigators have not discussed any details about who may have shot him Tuesday, or a motive behind the attack on him and his brother.
