An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from an author?s personal point of view. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope?s An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke?s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus?s An Essay on the Principle of Population are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an ?essay? has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay is an attempt to cover a topic with a linked series of photographs; it may or may not have an accompanying text or captions. An essay has been defined in a variety of ways. One definition is a ?prose composition with a focused subject of discussion? or a ?long, systematic discourse?.[1] It is difficult to define the genre into which essays fall. Aldous Huxley, a leading essayist, gives guidance on the subject.[2] He notes that ?[l]ike the novel, the essay is a literary device for saying almost everything about almost anything, usually on a certain topic. By tradition, almost by definition, the essay is a short piece, and it is therefore impossible to give all things full play within the limits of a single essay?. He points out that ?a collection of essays can cover almost as much ground, and cover it almost as thoroughly, as can a long novel??he gives Montaigne?s Third Book as an example. Huxley argues on several occasions that ?essays belong to a literary species whose extreme variability can be studied most effectively within a three-poled frame of reference?. Huxley?s three poles are

Easy Steps to Modernize The Lights in Your Home o5 Recipes for Life

New Interior Lighting

Proper, well thought out lighting can do wonders to any home. Using lighting fixtures conscientiously and providing the right light accents to your interiors is one of the best ways to really show off how your beautiful your home is. It is also a great way of jazzing up a space that you haven?t redecorated in a while.

Modernizing the lights in your home is a cool interior designer?s trick and here?s how to do it.

Assess your interiors

Walk through your home and assess the whole area and from here make an initial plan of where you plan to put up new lights or areas that you plan to light up. You can draw a rough sketch of the space and identify where you want to put the lights. You should also indicate which areas will need different lighting effects ? dim lights, bright lights, yellow lights, among others. Finally, mark which areas will need constant illumination (places where the lights will rarely be turned off) and those that will only be lighted sometimes.

Take care of the basics

The first step to modernizing your lights doesn?t start with replacing light bulbs and fixtures but on the less glamorous part of the system ? the wiring and switch boards. Have an electrician asses your connections and wiring to ensure that they?re safe and can handle the load. Repair anything that needs to be repaired. This is very important since most household fires are caused by faulty wiring. You should get new switch boards if you want a total updated look for your interiors.

Choose light fixtures

Identify what kind of fixtures you want for particular areas of the house. Do you want light scones, a chandelier, or lamps? These and more are options that are open to you but everything will have to depend on how it will look with the rest of your d?cor and the kind of atmosphere you want to create with the lights. Be very conscious about this part of the process because it is quite easy to fall into kitschiness if you choose the wrong lighting fixture for a room. Ask friends for their opinion, read up on design guides, visit design websites or participate in online forums. These are cost-effective ways of improving your interior designing skills.

Spruce up the oldies

You don?t necessarily have to buy brand new lighting fixtures. You can the old ones that you have. One great idea is to undertake improvements on the fixtures you already own. For example, placing new fabric on lamp shades or polishing up your chandelier.

Egyptians in hajj divided over Islam in politics

(AP) ? Now that she has finished the hajj and is returning home to Egypt, Magda Bagnied says her family will no doubt try to convince her to put on the headscarf to demonstrate her religiosity after a pilgrimage meant to cleanse her of sin and bring her closer to God.

She fully expects that from her parents. But she doesn't want that kind of pressure from her government or leaders.

"Leave religion to the people," said Bagnied, a media professor at Ahram Canadian University, in Cairo's suburbs.

The annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest sites offers Muslims a chance to reaffirm their faith and root themselves more firmly in their beliefs. It comes at a time when several Arab nations are facing a similar issue on a political level after uprisings that toppled longtime leaders and brought Islamists to greater power: The question of how much a government should be rooted in Islam.

Egypt in particular is struggling with that question. Elections since the fall last year of Hosni Mubarak elevated Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, to president. The Brotherhood was vaulted to become the country's strongest political force, along with even more conservative Islamists known as Salafis, who follow a strict Saudi-style interpretation of Islam.

As pilgrims were making their way around the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure in Mecca that observant Muslims pray toward five times a day, and performing an elaborate set of rituals in Saudi Arabia over the past week, Egypt was in a bitter struggle over the writing of the new constitution.

Salafis are pressing for the document to explicitly root Egypt's laws in Shariah. That has raised liberals' fears that it will bring stricter implementation of Islamic law and empower Muslim clerics in a political role, limiting women's rights and freedoms of worship and expression. The assembly writing the constitution is dominated by the Brotherhood and Salafis.

The Egyptians who performed the pilgrimage this year may be united in the importance they give to their faith in their lives. But it doesn't mean they all agree on the mix of religion and politics. More than 90,000 Egyptians were on the pilgrimage, which largely wrapped up on Monday. They hailed from all segments of Egyptian society, the rich and the poor, and from all corners of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Wearing the seamless terrycloth garments worn by male pilgrims to symbolize equality and unity during hajj, Sayid Zeid said Egypt's constitution should represent all Egyptians ? and, he added, it must be based on the Quran.

How can it be both, given the large Christian minority and the sector of liberal Muslims?

"Shariah will be applied by God ... It should be applied as it came down from God," said Zeid, who is a reporter with Egypt's state TV, though he was performing the hajj, not covering it.

For some, it seemed only natural that Islamic law would benefit a Muslim-majority nation, putting aside questions of who would interpret it or implement it.

Making his way to midday prayers at Mecca's Grand Mosque, which houses the Kaaba, Abdel-Muntalib el-Fikky said there is no reason to fear Shariah or the Islamists.

"Why are we all here? We are all here for God," he said of the pilgrims. "Our constitution, God willing, will be good. It will move us forward."

Anwar Saad, a 32 year-old teacher from Egypt's Beheira province, stood on Jabal al-Rahma in Mount Arafat, in the desert outside Mecca during a rite of prayer on Thursday that many feel is the pinnacle moment of hajj.

"The Brotherhood have moderate views. They are not conservative like the Salafis. We hope they will apply a moderate form of Shariah for Egypt," he said. "We want God to help Morsi succeed ... There were 30 years of corruption and this will not be fixed in 100 days. Be patient with the president."

Notably, hajj itself shows the variety in interpretations of Islamic rules. For example, in most of the Muslim world, men and women are segregated during prayers. But in the Grand Mosque, the two sexes pray side by side. For most of the hajj rites, women are not allowed to wear the veil that covers the entire face, even though ultraconservative Muslims insist a woman's face should be hidden from males not related to her.

Bagnied, the media professor, said she does not fear Shariah but those who would try to interpret and apply it.

"What kind of Islam do they want to apply? Afghanistan, Iran or Saudi Arabia?" she said. Bagnied, who does not wear the headscarf that many Egyptian Muslim women don to cover their hair, said she can resist her family's urging her to start wearing it. But she worries that an Islamist government will start to apply political pressure as well on such personal choices.

She said many people voted for Morsi hoping that because he is a pious Muslim and will apply "God's law" that their lives will improve.

"I think many Egyptians don't know the content of the constitution," she said. "Egypt is full of people talking about politics, but there is a large amount of ignorance in the country and you can convince people (by using Islam) that they have to obey their leaders, who are sheiks and politicians."

Ihab Abdel-Aal, 47, is among those who voted for the former Mubarak regime-era official who ran against Morsi in the past summer's presidential race. Morsi won by just over half the vote. Abdel-Aal has performed the hajj more than 25 times, since he's a tour operator bringing other Egyptians on the pilgrimage.

He fears Egypt is turning to a theocracy.

"Democracy and freedom are new to Egypt," he said. "There should be no religion in politics and no politics in religion."

Abdel-Aal, like many who work in Egypt's vital tourism industry that was hard-hit due to political turmoil over the past year, said he believes Shariah cannot be applied in all aspects of life.

"This will tank the economy and other sectors and just won't work."

Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, who runs a Cairo tourism company, says he has performed hajj more than 30 times. He said the number of Egyptians wanting to perform hajj and umrah, the smaller pilgrimage to Mecca, increased this year.

"In any crisis, the first thing a person does is pray to God," he said. "We are in a crisis."

(AP) ? The Ukrainian president's party will retain its strong grip on power, according to returns Monday from a parliamentary election that was criticized by Western observers as unfair and biased against the opposition.

The West was paying close attention to Sunday's vote in the strategic ex-Soviet state of 46 million people, which lies between Russia and the European Union and serves as a key transit nation for Russian energy supplies to many EU countries.

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe called the vote a setback to Ukraine's democratic and European aspirations. That assessment could lead to a further freeze in Kiev's ties with the West and push it closer to Russia.

Monitors said the election was marred by the absence of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and another opposition leader, the ruling party's use of government funding for the campaign and the skewed media coverage that favored the ruling party. While the voting process got positive ratings at most polling stations observed, the vote tallying lacked transparency, the group said.

"Considering the abuse of power and the excessive role of money in this election, democratic progress appears to have reversed in Ukraine," said Walburga Habsburg Douglas, the special coordinator who led the OSCE election observation mission. "We do not think that this election was fair because it was not level."

"Ukrainians deserved better from these elections," said Andreas Gross, the Head of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe delegation. "Unfortunately, the great democratic potential of Ukrainian society was not realized in yesterday's vote."

The U.S. State Department characterized Ukraine's elections as "a step backwards from progress made during previous parliamentary elections and the 2010 presidential election, elections that had marked important steps forward for Ukraine's democracy."

In a statement, the State Department expressed concern over "the use of government resources to favor ruling party candidates, interference with media access, and harassment of opposition candidates."

The State Department also was "troubled by allegations of fraud and falsification in the voting process and tabulation, by the disparity between preliminary results from the Central Election Commission and parallel vote tabulations, and by the Central Election Commission's decision not to release precinct results."

President Viktor Yanukovych's Russia-friendly Party of Regions was leading in the count with 34 percent of the vote. Tymoshenko's pro-Western party was second with 23 percent, trailed by the Communists, Yanukovych's traditional allies, with 15 percent. Another liberal party, Udar (Punch), led by world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko had 13 percent and the far-right Svoboda (Freedom) party had 9 percent.

Yanukovych's party benefited strongly from an electoral change last year that replaced the strictly proportional electoral system with a mixed one, in which half of parliament's seats are elected based on party lists and the other half in individual races.

Despite a combined strong showing of opposition parties, Yanukovych's party was poised to retain its parliamentary majority as its candidates were expected to take the lead in individual races, benefitting from greater access to government funds and the opposition's fielding of multiple candidates.

Tymoshenko's party alleged widespread violations such as vote-buying and multiple voting. Tymoshenko, who was sentenced last year to seven years in prison for abuse of office in a trial condemned by the West as politically motivated, launched a hunger strike to protest the vote violations.

The Party of Regions defended Sunday's election, saying it reflected the people's will.

"We received a great credit of trust from the voters who said that we are moving down the right path," said Yanukovych adviser Hanna Herman.

The opposition tapped into the anger over Tymoshenko's jailing, the country's rampant corruption and a stagnant economy to make a strong showing in the proportional section of the vote. It remains to be seen whether Tymoshenko's group, Klitschko's party and the radical Svoboda can form a strong alliance.

"The Party of Regions won by the number of points, but the opposition scored a moral victory," said Kiev-based political expert Volodymyr Fesenko. "The monopoly on power will be harder to maintain."

Experts say while Yanukovych's supporters seem poised to retain their parliament majority, they will fall short of winning the two-thirds of seats needed to change the constitution.

Political analyst Vadym Karasyov said the new parliament will be "turbulent" and the opposition will seek to block some of the undemocratic initiatives the president may launch.

"Yanukovych can get a simple majority, but it doesn't mean anything, because without a constitutional majority in parliament he cannot radically change anything," Karasyov said.

The showing of the far-right Svoboda party, which had been expected to barely pass the 5 percent vote threshold, emerged as a big surprise.

Svoboda, which campaigns for the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture and strongly attacks Yanukovych, is also known for xenophobic and anti-Semitic rhetoric. Analysts said the party's popularity was due more to many Ukrainians' anger with the ruling party than vehemently nationalist views.

Work Web Hosting To Your Advantage Now

What would need to happen if you're trying to put up a site to show off some items you made
and then wished to sell them? Well, you need to include a shopping cart in your site. You will
need a web hosting service set up for this. Not all of them give you this option. This article
can help you to identify the right web hosting service for your online endeavors.

Be sure you can contact your host various ways if you have issues. Live chat with customer
support, email, toll-free telephone number and a real address are all items which show the
host is probably a good one. This will save you a lot of headaches, if something should
happen.

Create a priority list prior to looking for your web host. Match your 'must have' list with
services offered by the companies that you are considering. Using a list like this can help you
avoid bad decisions just based on a single factor, like price, and instead find what you need
at a great deal.

A control panel (cPanel) is of utmost importance if you are choosing a web host. Control
panels allow you to easily and quickly install popular features on your website. These
applications are usually very intuitive and user-friendly to install. Furthermore, a cPanel
makes it easier to manage your website.

Are you interested in a hosting provider that uses Windows, or one that uses Linux? In effect,
this requires you to learn the features of nuances of each platform. Linux platforms are
typically cheaper, easier to use, and more flexible than Windows.

Solid Advice On How To Properly Set Up A Web Hosting Site Choosing Web Hosting That
Works For You Looking For A Web Host For Your Business? Try These Great Ideas! Does
the company offer a portion of your money back if you want to end your contract early? A
reputable company will give you a refund if you aren't satisfied with your service in the first 30
days. Sometimes the service a host claims to provide is not everything it's supposed to be.

Be sure you know how much bandwidth and disk space you will need. Factors such as your
webpage elements, as well as the number of visitors the page receives, will effect your
requirements. Many companies offer unlimited amounts of storage and bandwidth for your
use. If you have insufficient disk space or data transfer, your website will have lots of
downtime.

You should know the maintenance schedule of your web hosting company. Ideally,
maintenance that is scheduled should only be scheduled for once every thirty days. This will
limit the amount of down time that your site will have if you choose to use that particular web
hosting service.

Before settling on a web hosting provider, do some research to determine how long the
business has operated. A long-standing company will, generally, provide better support. And
when a problem does occur, chances are the web hosting company will have dealt with it
before, thus providing the experience you need. For the more common problems, they will
most likely have standardized procedures for resolution in place. Going with an established
and well known web host should prevent you from suffering through inexperienced support
staff and frustrating amateur trouble shooting common at newer hosting companies.

As you have read, web hosts all have different features and things that they can offer.
Remember the tips you just read. They can help you figure out which features you need and
which are optional, so that you can make a wise decision regarding web hosting. Comparing
prices enables you to determine which company will give you the features you need at the
price you want, and every little bit of money saved adds up. Good luck in your efforts!

Express Paid Surveys Review | Marijuana for MRSA

This type of information you freely offer to companies by filling out their survey is very valuable to them. You can start taking survey online, once you are registered. The number of surveys available differs from people to people and from websites to websites. The reward for every instant win play I?ve ever done has been entries into a Grand Prize drawing (somewhere between 5 and 100 entries). It is a well-organized site as all options are categorized for navigation ease.

Regardless of what you may have heard, you can earn money with surveys. It can take place within the next hour or up to one or two weeks later. Being a two-tiered referral program, you make money even when your referral refers someone else. Have you ever thought of making money online? Often product companies are only targeting a certain group of people.

It is possible to make some money with paid surveys. It is also important that you are registered with the right companies, that is, market research companies that have a host of clients and hence many surveys. I will guess that you?ve been taking paid surveys for quite a while now. It?s not your fault, though, because this is the kind of sites you are being shown. First thing that you can do is to search this subject into the Internet.

And we are talking about normal folks, not some professors or professionals and anyone belonging to the elite echelon of society that are making honest income online from free online paid surveys. I?ts a good idea to start off with around 10 to 20 good paid survey companies. First, large forums are where you?re going to get supplied with extremely honest and in depth information. Some survey sites will enter your name in a monthly drawing for cash or points. There are many online paid surveys that are willing to pay you in exchange for the honest opinion.

They do not want people who know the market research business taking their surveys. One can register in any number of panels. Before start working with online paid surveys you should know about these and how to start with these online surveys so that you can get most out of it. If you present them with a complete profile, you will easily be given a survey that you can fill up. You will not become rich doing online surveys, but it will help to give you some extra cash.

This isn?t because of what you have to do. We have to say without a hesitation the choice on the Internet is absolutely enormous. I?ve found sometimes I have to stop myself before Time passes bonkers on the computer screen. And that is full time basis. You need to complete a survey, within an allotted time frame, and within your local region.

Making money from home is possible, but it?s not always easy. Finding corporations inclined to pay out for surveys is rather straightforward. You do not need to wait long for your money. No products to test / sample! I have been doing paid surveys for sometime now and I do make a nice income that helps with the extras in life.

The trick of getting around the wait is to register at multiple survey sites. Making money from home is possible, but it?s not always easy.

Earth's magnetosphere behaves like a sieve

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? ESA's quartet of satellites studying Earth's magnetosphere, Cluster, has discovered that our protective magnetic bubble lets the solar wind in under a wider range of conditions than previously believed.

Earth's magnetic field is our planet's first line of defence against the bombardment of the solar wind. This stream of plasma is launched by the Sun and travels across the Solar System, carrying its own magnetic field with it.

Depending on how the solar wind's interplanetary magnetic field -- IMF -- is aligned with Earth's magnetic field, different phenomena can arise in Earth's immediate environment.

One well-known process is magnetic reconnection, where magnetic field lines pointing in opposite directions spontaneously break and reconnect with other nearby field lines. This redirects their plasma load into the magnetosphere, opening the door to the solar wind and allowing it to reach Earth.

Under certain circumstances this can drive 'space weather', generating spectacular aurorae, interrupting GPS signals and affecting terrestrial power systems.

In 2006, Cluster made the surprising discovery that huge, 40 000 km swirls of plasma along the boundary of the magnetosphere -- the magnetopause -- could allow the solar wind to enter, even when Earth's magnetic field and the IMF are aligned.

These swirls were found at low, equatorial latitudes, where the magnetic fields were most closely aligned.

These giant vortices are driven by a process known as the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) effect, which can occur anywhere in nature when two adjacent flows slip past each other at different speeds.

Examples include waves whipped up by wind sliding across the surface of the ocean, or in atmospheric clouds.

Analysis of Cluster data has now found that KH waves can also occur at a wider range of magnetopause locations and when the IMF is arranged in a number of other configurations, providing a mechanism for the continuous transport of the solar wind into Earth's magnetosphere.

"We found that when the interplanetary magnetic field is westward or eastward, magnetopause boundary layers at higher latitude become most subject to KH instabilities, regions quite distant from previous observations of these waves," says Kyoung-Joo Hwang of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and lead author of the paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

"In fact, it's very hard to imagine a situation where solar wind plasma could not leak into the magnetosphere, since it is not a perfect magnetic bubble."

The findings confirm theoretical predictions and are reproduced by simulations presented by the authors of the new study.

"The solar wind can enter the magnetosphere at different locations and under different magnetic field conditions that we hadn't known about before," says co-author Melvyn Goldstein, also from Goddard Space Flight Center.

"That suggests there is a 'sieve-like' property of the magnetopause in allowing the solar wind to continuously flow into the magnetosphere."

The KH effect is also seen in the magnetospheres of Mercury and Saturn, and the new results suggest that it may provide a possible continuous entry mechanism of solar wind into those planetary magnetospheres, too.

"Cluster's observations of these boundary waves have provided a great advance on our understanding of solar wind -- magnetosphere interactions, which are at the heart of space weather research," says Matt Taylor, ESA's Cluster project scientist.

"In this case, the relatively small separation of the four Cluster satellites as they passed through the high-latitude dayside magnetopause provided a microscopic look at the processes ripping open the magnetopause and allowing particles from the Sun direct entry into the atmosphere."

Human-like robots getting ready to save lives

21 hrs.

When future super-charged weather systems rip through town and leave the industrial complex spewing toxic waste, robots with super-human capabilities will be dispatched to the rescue. Today, we get our first look at what some of these humanoids will look like.

The Pentagon?s futuristic research arm unveiled the seven teams selected to compete in the top track of the DARPA Robotics Challenge. By the rules of the contest, the robots look as human as C-3P0 of ?Star Wars? fame, but are designed to be real-world emergency responders.

Each of the robots will need the smarts and dexterity to drive a vehicle such as a fire truck; run on rough, sloped terrain with loose dirt and rocks; move material such as a fallen tree limb to enter a doorway; climb a ladder; break through concrete; find and fix a leaky pipe; and replace a cooling pump.?

The seven teams will receive up to $4 million each to develop both the hardware and software for their proposed robots. Among the winners are Virginia Tech?s gladiator-look-alike THOR, the Tactical Hazardous Operations Robot, and Raytheon?s Stormtrooper-esque Guardian.

Other selected teams include Carnegie Mellon University?s CHIMP (CMU Highly Intelligent Mobile Platform); Drexel University?s Hubo; NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory?s RoboSimian; NASA Johnson Space Center; and Shaft Inc. Click here for Images of all the robots.?

In addition to the Track A teams, DARPA selected 11 Track B teams who will receive funding to write software for the Simulator, ?a cloud-based, real time, operator-interactive virtual test bed that uses physics based models of inertia, actuation, contact and environment dynamics,? the agency explains.

Track B and unfunded Track C teams, who are now free to register, will compete for access to one of a few handfuls of modified ATLAS robots developed for DARPA by Boston Dynamics. Check out the video clip below to see some of this robot?s capabilities.?

Interested in competing, perhaps even designing a robot that?s non-human like? Then consider registering for Track D?which is open to any team who wants to develop a complete system, both hardware and software, at their own expense.?

Teams will compete each other, beginning with a Virtual Robitics Challenge in June 2013. The first live event is in December 2013 with a second live challenge in December 2014. Depending on the track, teams that advance from each round will receive additional funding, except the Track D.

And "regardless of what track they originated in,?the winner of the December 2014 event will also receive an additional $2 million prize," a DARPA spokesperson told NBC News.

Historic building at University of Alabama could be moved

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? One of the oldest buildings on the University of Alabama campus may be moved to make way for a new dining hall.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that university officials are in talks with a buyer for the Kilgore House, a Queen Anne-style home built for Bryce Hospital's first engineer in 1890.

Historic preservation groups want the university to leave the house where it is.

University spokeswoman Cathy Andreen said she could not discuss the potential buyer. But she said current plans call for moving the building.

The director of the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation, David Schneider, said the best outcome would be to leave the building where it is. He said the worst-case scenario would be demolition. He said moving a building can be expensive and difficult.

Tropical Storm Sandy forecast to miss Florida; new depression forms

Tropical Storm Sandy emerged in the southwest Caribbean on Monday afternoon and for now is projected to remain clear of Florida.

Also, for now, it is not forecast to strengthen into a hurricane.

Meanwhile, a new depression formed in the Central Atlantic but poses little or no threat to land. It forecast to become Tropical Storm Tony either tonight or Tuesday and fizzle by Thursday.

At 11 p.m., Sandy, the 18th named storm of the season, was about 385 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, stationary with sustained winds of 45 mph.

The system is predicted to angle northeast over Jamaica on Wednesday, move over Cuba on Thursday and arrive over the central Bahamas on Friday.

If that prediction holds, it would be about 400 miles east of Miami on Friday, its closest approach to the state.

The system still might come close enough to generate large swells, rough surf, gusty winds and heavy rains, starting on Thursday and continuing into the weekend, the National Weather Service in Miami said.

"As always, it's advised to not focus too much on the center location and eventual track, especially with late-season systems like this," he said, adding the large system might generate nasty weather far from its center.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to Jamaica, Cuba and Hispaniola over the next few days. A tropical storm watch has been issued for Jamaica.

With Sandy, the 2012 Atlantic season becomes the fourth busiest on record, tied with 1969, which also saw 18 named storms.

Ahead of this year: 2005 with 28 storms; 1933 with 21; and 2011, 2010, 1995 and 1887 with 19.

SmartGlass goes live alongside first Windows 8 tablets on October 26 with several supported apps

SmartGlass functionality may already sort of exist on Xbox 360 per the console's latest Dashboard update, but Microsoft's making it a full-on reality on October 26. As it stands, the Xbox 360 allows for SmartGlass support, but without an update to Microsoft's 360 companion app, there's no way to use it -- when Microsoft's Surface RT and other Windows 8 tablets launch on the 26, that functionality will come built in to the "Games" section of the new OS. That of course begs the question: "When will I be able to use SmartGlass with my iOS/Android/Windows Phone 7.5 devices? And how?"

The date isn't certain, but functionality will arrive on other platforms "soon" after the October 26 launch of Surface, Microsoft reps tell us. When it does, it'll come in the form of an update to your existing, "My Xbox Live" mobile app (which also renames the app to, "Xbox SmartGlass") or Games tab (per WP7.5), and it'll be more or less identical with the Windows Phone version. The only missing functionality, we're told, are two somewhat basic bulletpoints. "We have deeper integration in the Windows Phone," Microsoft tells us. "That's something we don't have on iOS or Android, it's just within our application. Same on Windows -- the integration in Windows is 'last playing' or 'now playing,' being able to present that information." The other, more interesting item, is the lacking ability to "send" whatever website you're using up to the Xbox 360's Internet Explorer browser. Regardless of which mobile device you're on, SmartGlass can "send" websites from the 360 to said device -- it won't work the other way around, however, if you're using a non-Windows 8 device. Not what we'd call a huge deal, exactly, but a bummer no less. Regardless, you'll soon have the opportunity to put SmartGlass through its paces from the comfort of home when support devices launch on October 26. For a full list of applications available at launch and partners beyond that plus a quick walkthrough video, head past the break.
