Chance for TAR College to make a splash

HOSTS Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) College are aiming to stay competitive in their fifth water polo tournament at the main campus swimming pool in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur on Dec 22 and 23.

Despite finishing at the bottom of the standing in recent years, tournament organising chairman Goh Wei Kok said they were attempting to rise to the occasion and match the more formidable sides at the upcoming two-day meet.

The current TAR college students will form the Junior line-up while it will be a chance for former students to soak up the atmosphere when they reunite and compete under the Ex-Senior banner.

?Water polo has been part of the programme for the college?s swimming club.

?Over the years, it has been a learning experience for us in going up against the stronger state teams in the competition.

?Most of us have acquired the basic background in swimming. Competing in water polo competitions has been a great avenue for us to develop teamwork. We have been forging good understanding as most of us have been featuring for the team at various tournaments in recent years.

?However, we are still finding it tough to trouble the more experienced opponents,? added Wei Kok, who is pursuing his advanced diploma in finance and investment.

As a build-up to the tournament, stocky Bryan Lee has been leading the TAR College Junior side, comprising a total of 13 players, to go through the paces in their regular training sessions three times a week.

And they are expecting a total of 12 teams to join the action in the upcoming two-day meet.

Teams are allowed to beef up their respective sides, comprising 15 players each, with the services of current and former national representatives for the six-a-side contest decided over four periods of 12 minutes each.

Negri Sembilan have confirmed their entries by fielding three teams while Kuala Lumpur will also have a strong representation of three teams including an all-women side joining the fray.

?Defending champions Penang have indicated that they will be defending their title but we are not sure of the actual strength of their entry in the competition because they might not pick their top-ranked side to shoulder the challenges,? said Wei Kok.

Besides 2010 winners Malacca, the hosts have also extended their invitation to Perak, Selangor, Royal Malaysian Navy, Cempaka and Ipoh International.
