Plans move forward for $100 million golf resort on Lake Hartwell

A state panel has approved plans for a $100 million golf resort planned for Lake Hartwell.

The Budget and Control Board voted 4-1 on Tuesday to approve the planning for the site near I-85 in Oconee County.

In December the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced a development plan for the proposed 325-acre site.

Billy Birdwell, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District public affairs specialist, said the development plan provides for a comprehensive resort facility that may include hotels, lodging facilities, golf course, courtesy slips, a resort harbor area and the potential for marina services.

Additional approval is needed from the state and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

State Parks, Recreation & Tourism Director Duane Parrish said the Sanctuary Pointe development would bring hundreds of jobs.

"(It would bring) 300 to 400 jobs during the construction, engineering and architectural phase. And once this builds out and is completed it should employ somewhere between 400 and 500 people on a permanent basis, which is a big benefit for the Upstate and for Oconee County."

Elmon Henry and Robert Daffin of Sanctuary Pointe in Seneca plan to begin talking with potential partners for the project. Henry says he hopes construction can start next year.

Henry said there is nothing but a logging road in the area now. ??????????????????

Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom was the only board member to vote no. Eckstrom questioned whether the Upstate needs another golf course.
