Chance of rain didn?t break their stride
Clad in pink T-shirts, walkers began the day with a warm-up presented by Curves Fitness. Fortunately, the rain held off as participants, led by breast cancer survivors, enjoyed a leisurely 6-mile stroll, and stopped at health education stations along the way. ?We have a lot of survivors here,? said Mary Pat Hastings, the county?s director of nursing as she welcomed the crowd. ?We?ve come a long way.?
The inaugural event was sponsored by the county?s Cancer Education and Early Detection program. Funded by the county and state, the program provides breast, cervical and colon-rectal cancer screenings for uninsured county women, and breast, prostate and colon-rectal cancer screenings for men.
After melanoma, breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths after lung cancer. For every 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer, one man is also afflicted. Women have a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. In all cases, prevention and early detection are key factors for survival.
County Freeholder Kristine Gabor, whose aunt is a 20-year breast cancer survivor, called the walk ?an outstanding way for everyone to get together and celebrate life. We all worry about breast cancer as women, and also some men. It?s important that we take the necessary precautions and fight against the disease.
?I would love to see this happen every year,? said Gabor. ?I foresee this becoming an annual affair.?
