GOP Embarking on Most Important Political Moment of 2011 (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Republicans are formulating legislation to extend the Social Security tax break and the extension of the unemployment benefits program, according to Fox News. At the same time, the GOP strongly believes the Democrats will be on board with this legislation since it is based on some of the parts of President Obama's jobs bill. As a political consultant, I see this as a sign of strength in Congress.

The last few years have been marred by partisanship divide in Congress. Our trust in our elected officials has fallen due to the fact that every piece of legislation is being looked at through party glasses instead of weighing it on content and how important it is to the American people. The political party lines have become more important in the country than moving our nation forward.

As late as this morning, any time a politician has considered taking the side of the opposing party, the media has engaged in backlash. Rep. Boehner is considering siding with Democrats in Congress to avoid a government shutdown. Instead of weighing how important this move is to the U.S., Republicans went after him as a defector. Fox News printed an article this morning questioning his decision.

I have heard people state their belief that the economy is holding the United States back the most. Others believe our national debt is the greatest hurdle. Some may even go as far as to say President Obama, the Democrats or the Republicans are holding us back. All of these are stresses, but partisan divide is tearing this country apart.

If the extension of the unemployment benefits and Social Security tax break can pass, it will be a monumental moment for our country. Instead of dealing with lengthy battles drawn across party lines, Congress will have gotten something done for us. They will have done we put them in office for. The Republicans and Democrats will prove they can get together from time to time to do what needs to be done.

This could be the first step in the right direction for Capitol Hill. The extension of unemployment benefits and the Social Security tax break might open the door for more bipartisan legislation in the near future. Passage of this bill will be the single most important political moment of 2011.
