Curcumin is a phenolic acid that can be sourced from the cooking spice turmeric. It acts as a powerful antioxidant in humans and protects the body's cells from dangerous free radicals (harmful by-products that are released into the cells during oxygen related reactions). Provisional studies suggest that it may also have many more health benefits. In this article I will be providing you with a detailed overview of curcumin and taking a deeper look at its potential health benefits.

1) DISCOVERY:

Awareness of curcumin dates back to 1900 B.C. where turmeric was used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for various health problems. However, it was not extracted from turmeric until the 1800s and it was only identified as the active component in turmeric during the latter half of the 20th century.

2) HEALTH BENEFITS:

Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant that can protect your body's cells from damaging free radicals (nasty by-products that are released into the cells during oxygen related reactions and can lead to cancer, diabetes and increased visible signs of ageing). Early evidence suggests that this phenolic acid may have even more health benefits but more research is required before they can be confirmed in humans.

According to this initial evidence curcumin might be an antibacterial (a substance that kills or prevents the growth of bacteria), an antidepresant, an anti-inflammatory (a substance that reduces unnecessary inflammation in the body) and an antiviral (a substance that kills or prevents the growth of viruses).

In addition to this, it may protect against Alzheimer's disease (a mental condition which causes memory loss and speech loss), atherosclerosis (a health disorder where hard plaques block your artery walls, restrict the flow of blood and increase your heart disease risk), the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and cancer (a health disorder which leads to rapid, uncontrollable cellular growth).

Finally, this phenolic acid may be effective at treating various health disorders including arthritis (inflammation of the joints), cataracts (clouding on the lenses of the eyes), diabetes (a health disorder which leads to your blood glucose levels becoming extremely high), indigestion, inflammatory skin disorders, kidney disease and multiple sclerosis (a nerve disorder which causes depression, impaired mobility, muscular weakness and vision problems).

3) RECOMMENDED DAILY ALLOWANCE (RDA):

Curcumin does not have an official recommended daily allowance (RDA). Studies have used doses ranging from 100 milligrams (mg) to 8,000mg per day to uncover the potential health benefits outlined above and doses of up to 12,000mg a day are thought to have no adverse side effects.

4) FOOD SOURCES:

Curcumin can only be sourced from turmeric with a 100 gram (g) serving providing you with about 5g of this phenolic acid.
