Poulter keeps Europeans in the hunt at Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley helped stake the Americans to their biggest lead in the Ryder Cup in more than 30 years. Ian Poulter, eyes bulging and fists shaking with every clutch putt, at least gave Europe some big momentum over the final frantic hour Saturday at Medinah.

Right when it looked as if the Americans were a lock to win back the cup, Poulter birdied his last five holes to win a crucial point and keep everyone guessing. Steady chants of "USA! USA!" gave way to snappy serenades of "Ole, Ole" as both sides trudged to the team rooms in darkness to prepare for 12 singles matches on Sunday.

The Americans still had a big lead, 10-6. Europe at least had hope.

"The last two putts were massive," European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said after watching Poulter stay undefeated in this Ryder Cup by rolling in one last birdie putt from 12 feet. "That gives us a chance. It's been done before in the past. Tomorrow is a big day."

Only one team has ever rallied from four points behind on the final day ? the United States in that famous comeback at Brookline in 1999. Olazabal remembers it well. He was in the decisive match when Justin Leonard rolled in a 45-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole.

Is the Spaniard a big believer in fate?

"I believe momentum will come our way," Olazabal said. "Why not tomorrow?"

The final two matches Saturday were a showcase of what the Ryder Cup is all about ? one brilliant shot after another, birdies on every hole, suspense at every turn.

Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia were on the verge of blowing a 4-up lead to hard-charging Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, hanging on when Donald matched two birdies with Woods, including a tee shot into the 17th that plopped down 2 feet from the cup.

Their 1-up win kept Woods winless for the first time in a Ryder Cup going into Sunday. Woods and Stricker lost all three of their matches, even though Woods made five birdies on the back nine for the second straight day.

Woods was thinking more of the big picture.

"Being up four is nice," he said. "We are in a great spot right now to win the cup."

Poulter and Rory McIlroy were 2 down with six holes to play against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson when McIlroy made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 13th, and Poulter took it from there.

"We had to make birdies, and wow! Five in a row. It was awesome," Poulter said. "I've got the world No. 1 at my side, backing me up. It allowed me to hit some golf shots."

The crowd was still buzzing as it filed out of Medinah, and Poulter grinned.

"It's pretty fun, this Ryder Cup," said Poulter, who raised his career record to 11-3-0.

It's been plenty fun for the Americans, who for the first time have not lost any of the four sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the current format in 1979. Mickelson and Bradley were flawless in foursomes, matching a Ryder Cup record for largest margin with a 7-and-6 win over Donald and Lee Westwood.

Mickelson and Bradley have been so dominant that they have yet to play the 18th hole in any of their three matches. They didn't play in the afternoon, part of the master plan by U.S. captain Davis Love III to make sure his players were fresh for Sunday. Love became the first U.S. captain since 1979 to make sure each of his players sat out at least one match before the final day.

Now, he finds out if it will work.

"We're not disappointed," Love said of the late rally by Europe. "We haven't lost a segment yet, and we're just going to try to keep that string going."

Despite the last two matches that swung momentum away from them, the Americans only have to look at their 10-6 lead ? their largest since it was 10?-5? in 1981 ? to realize how close they are to winning back that 17-inch gold trophy. They only need 14? points to win. That translates to four wins and a halve in the 12 singles matches, traditionally an American strength.

And they have built this lead without getting a single point from Woods, who has lost his last five matches with Stricker in two Ryder Cups and a Presidents Cup.

"I've played well the last two afternoons and didn't get a point," Woods said. "It's tough. Yesterday I made a bunch of birdies and today I made five on the back nine and it just wasn't enough."

His team has carried him along, though.

Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson rolled to a 5-and-4 win in the afternoon, while Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar won for the second straight time in fourballs in a tight match. It was tied going to the par-3 17th, a daunting shot from an elevated tee to a narrow green guarded by water. Johnson hit 8-iron to 20 feet and poured in the birdie putt, setting off the loudest cheer of a raucous week outside Chicago. They halved the 18th for a 1-up win.

"Probably the loudest roar I've ever heard," Johnson said. "In that situation, probably one of the best putts I've ever made."

The Americans had a 5-3 lead to start the day, and it was critical for the Europeans to make inroads. Instead, they saw more American red on the scoreboards and heard endless cheers erupt from all corners of Medinah.

Leading the way was Bradley, the rock star of this Ryder Cup who was so fired up that he came out to the first tee well before his match to ask for noise. In alternate shot, the most difficult format, Bradley and Mickelson had six birdies in 10 holes, and their 7-and-6 win tied the Ryder Cup record last matched in 1991.

Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker atoned for a Friday loss by beating McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in 18 holes, and the Americans took an 8-4 lead to the afternoon. All the momentum was on their side. The crowd felt it, and so did the players from both teams.

"It was hard ? very hard ? to ignore the red on the board," McDowell said. "It's hard to ignore the noise that's been made around the golf course. There's blood in the water. They're up for it."

That's what made those last two matches so critical.

Woods did not play Saturday morning, the first time he's ever been at the Ryder Cup in uniform without a tee time, and he didn't contribute much in falling so far behind. But he turned it around on the back nine, pointing to the cup when a birdie putt fell, screaming orders at his tee shot as the ball was in the air, looking like he was on the verge of a big comeback. Donald and Garcia, who had yet to win a point, made sure that didn't happen.

"That was big," Donald said. "Having these matches turn our way has really given the European side a lift that we needed. It's given us a heartbeat for tomorrow."

Poulter and McIlroy came up big in so many ways. The Americans had won every match at Medinah when leading on the back nine until the final match. McIlroy made his sliding birdie putt from 15 feet on the 13th hole, and Poulter did the rest.

"Poults gets that look in his eye ? especially the week of the Ryder Cup ? and it's really impressive," McIlroy said.

The Europeans now hope to take a page from the Americans when they staged the great comeback of 1999. The Americans had Ben Crenshaw, wagging his finger and saying, "I'm a big believer in fate." The Europeans have Olazabal, a proud Spaniard and teammate of the late Seve Ballesteros. This is the first Ryder Cup since his death from a brain tumor in May 2011, and the Europeans are expected to be dressed in navy blue, the color Ballesteros favored, on Sunday.

"It's always possible," Paul Lawrie said. "Until it's impossible to do it, then you fight on, certainly for Jos? Mar?a this week. No one is going to be giving up."

Deleting media in FTM 2012 on Windows 7 - Family Tree Maker ...

It has been a long day so I may just be confusing myself. But I have been cleaning up my media (finally!) and have been deleting a thousand or more duplicate or otherwise unwanted photos. After selecting the photo and hitting Delete I get a confirmation message which also has the option to tick a box to send the deleted file to the recycle bin. With other software this option is kind of a failsafe, so you can get one last chance to change your mind and restore the file from the recycle bin. But is FTM's approach different?

Answer ID 2437 appeared to indicate the media file has been deleted from your tree, with or without the recycle bin option. The answer did not spell out, as another Help item I found later seems to, that the media file remains in the media folder unless you direct it to the recycle bin. I hate extra clicks but is that what I have to do to actually reduce the size of the FTM media folder?

Will the media I deleted without sending to the recycle bin be part of syncing the tree to Ancestry...I would hope not?

But does it impact performance of the FTM tree which is already very challenged when it comes to working with the media tab? And finally do these "deleted" media files get backed up when backing up the tree itself on the hard drive, or are only the linked media included in the backup?

Grateful for your input. Thanks in advance.

Gay couples may get reprieve in deportation cases - Salt Lake Tribune

In this photo taken Jan. 4, 2012, Bradford Wells, left, and Anthony John Makk pose together at their home in San Francisco. Wells and Makk, are a married gay couple that have lived most of their 19 years of relationship in San Francisco. Makk is a citizen of Australia married to Wells, a U.S. citizen who suffers from AIDS-related illness. Makk is his primary caregiver. The Department of Homeland Security plans to instruct its field offices next week illegal immigrants with same-sex partners or spouses are eligible for consideration under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority deportation cases. Secretary Janet Napolitano has told Democratic lawmakers that binational gay couples who are married or in long-term relationships will be defined as having the family ties government lawyers can cite as grounds for dropping deportation proceedings. (AP Photo/San Francisco Chronicle, Michael Macor)

Low priority ? New policy announced in Napolitano letter to Dem lawmakers.

San Francisco ? The Department of Homeland Security is planning to issue a policy memo stating that illegal immigrants with American same-sex partners are eligible to have their deportations put on hold under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority cases.

The move had been sought by gay rights activists and their allies in Congress before Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced plans for the policy Thursday in a letter to 84 Democratic lawmakers.

"It will mark the very first time that lesbian and gay couples have been recognized within immigration policy for relief," said Steve Ralls, the spokesman for Immigration Equality, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender immigrants.

The Democratic lawmakers addressed in Napolitano?s letter pressed the agency to inform Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices that bi-national gay couples in long-term relationships have family ties that should be considered as grounds for deferring a foreign citizen?s removal from the U.S.

"I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase ?family relationships? includes long-term, same-sex partners," Napolitano wrote, adding that the decision to grant reprieves still would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The instructions do not mean that foreigners who are married to Americans of the same sex will be eligible for green cards or citizenship, as are immigrants with opposite sex spouses. The Obama administration is continuing to enforce a 1996 law that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even as it opposes it in court and takes gay relationships into account when evaluating deportation cases.

The Williams Institute, a think tank, estimates that as of 2010 there were about 29,000 same-sex couples nationwide comprised of a U.S. citizen and a citizen of another country.

The policy guidance expected to go out next week will reference a memo ICE Director John Morton issued last year advising the agency?s officers and lawyers to review pending deportation cases to determine which ones should be top priority and which ones might be shelved, Napolitano said.

Government attorneys weigh factors such as a person?s criminal record, family ties and community relations in making their decisions.

ICE officials said at the time that long-term same-sex relationships could be included under the family ties criteria, but advocates and House Democrats led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted that determination put into writing.

Hundreds of Libyans handover their weapons

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) ? Hundreds of Libyans converged Saturday on a main square in Benghazi and another in Tripoli in response to a call from the military to hand over their weapons, some driving in with armored personnel carriers, tanks, vehicles with mounted anti-aircraft guns and hundreds of rocket launchers.

The call by the Libyan chiefs of staff was promoted on a private TV station in August. But it may have gained traction in the wake of the attack against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which the American ambassador and three staffers were killed. The incident was followed by a popular uproar against armed militias which have increasingly challenged government authorities.

In response, the government has called on all militias to disband or join a command center coordinating between the army and the militias. The government had relied on many militias for security during the turmoil following last year's ouster and killing of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Army Col. Omran al-Warfali said the turnout has been impressive.

"Hundreds of citizens came since the early hours of this morning to handover their weapons from all segments of society, men and youth, women, and even children came to hand over bullets they found it in the streets," he said.

Previously, the government had estimated that over 200,000 people in Libya are armed. It has attempted a number of disarmament schemes, including offering people jobs in exchange for handing over their weapons, or offering to buy guns. Those offers have shown few results.

A military official has been urging citizens in ads on a popular TV station to hand in their weapons. The station, Libya alHurra or Free Libya, showed live footage of Saturday's collection and transfer of weapons to military barracks.

Ahmed Salem, an organizer of the efforts in Benghazi, said over 800 citizens handed in weapons at the main collection point. Over 600 different types of arms were collected, including anti-aircraft guns, land mines, rocket launchers and artillery rockets.

Moussa Omr, a former fighter who lives on the outskirts of Benghazi and who fought against Gadhafi, said it was time to turn over his weapon to the state.

"When I saw the announcement on television I came to Benghazi with my wife and son to hand over my weapon to the national army because I want to move from the stage of the revolution to state building," he said. "I trust the national army. They have been with us on the frontline and I know them one by one. I don't need this weapon after today, the militias have been expelled from Benghazi and the national army will protect us."

Anger at the militias boiled over after the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate.

Most of Libya's militias emerged during the eight-month war against Gadhafi, but others sprang up after the end of fighting last October. With the country trying to rebuild after the 42-year dictatorship, the groups paid little attention to successive interim leaders. They were accused of bullying citizens, operating independent prisons and holding summary trials for Gadhafi loyalists. Recently, Islamist-led militias have also attacked shrines, such as tombs associated with religious figures they consider counter to their strict interpretation of Islam.

Last weekend, thousands of protesters marched against the militias in Benghazi, the cradle of the uprising against Gadhafi, and stormed two of their compounds.

In Tripoli, at least 200 former fighters handed over their weapons, including two tanks, at the Martyrs' square in the city center. A cleric urged young fighters to give up their weapons. "The nation is built with knowledge not guns," he said standing in the square.

UN chief gets pranked by Quebec radio station

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Former victims include Bill Gates, Mick Jagger, Britney Spears and Sarah Palin.

This week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon joined the ranks of those pranked by a Quebec radio station, his office confirmed Thursday.

Montreal comedy duo Marc-Antoine Audette and Sebastien Trudel called Ban on Wednesday afternoon and pretended to be Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"He quickly realized it was a prank ... and he took it as it was intended: as a joke," said Eri Kaneko, associate spokeswoman for Ban's office.

Known as the Masked Avengers, the two are notorious for prank calls to celebrities and heads of state. The duo said in a news release that the world's top diplomat was rushed out of an important meeting to speak to them. Quebec City radio station CKOI played excerpts of the prank Thursday, and was planning on broadcasting the entire call Friday.

During the call, Ban appears to become suspicious when fake Harper complains he was too busy combing his hair with Krazy Glue to attend this week's ministerial meeting of the U.N. General Assembly ? a clear dig at the Canadian prime minister's immaculate hairdo.

"Excuse me, am I speaking with Prime Minister Harper right now?" Ban is quoted as saying.

Fake Harper begins the call in French by explaining why he sent his "lap dog," Foreign Minister John Baird to New York in his place.

Audette said he was surprised by how quickly they got to Ban after talking to about half a dozen people on the phone.

"We thought it would take us a few days to get the secretary-general on the phone," he said. Audette played Harper, while Trudel acted as his aide.

The joke on Ban came during his busiest week of the year, when leaders from all over the world converge to headquarters in New York.

"Perhaps this was not the best use of his time," Kaneko said. "In the future, we will be listening extra hard for poor French accents for any calls coming from Canada."

Nevertheless, Ban was a good sport, the prankster said.

"He was very cool about it, even laughed," Audette said. "He's very likeable."

"Well played," Harper's spokesman tweeted about the prank.

Is Anorexia a Cultural Disease?

Daisy Duck in Dolce & Gabbana. A very svelte Daisy Duck models Dolce & Gabbana for Barneys' holiday campaign

From the outside, my eating disorder looked a lot like vanity run amok. It looked like a diet or an obsession with the size of my thighs. I spewed self- and body-hatred to friends and family for well over a decade. Anorexia may have looked like a disorder brought about by the fashion industry, by a desire to be thin and model-perfect that got out of hand.

Except that it wasn't. I wasn't being vain when I craned my neck trying to check out my butt in the mirror?I truly had no idea what size I was anymore. I was so afraid of calories that I refused to use lip balm and, at one point, was unable to drink water. I was terrified of gaining weight, but I couldn't explain why.

As I lay in yet another hospital bed hooked up to yet another set of IVs and heart monitors, the idea of eating disorders as a cultural disorder struck me as utterly ludicrous. I didn't read fashion magazines, and altering my appearance wasn't what drove me to start restricting my food intake. I just wanted to feel better; I thought cutting out snacks might be a good way to make that happen. The more I read, the more I came to understand that culture is only a small part of an eating disorder. Much of my eating disorder, I learned, was driven by my own history of anxiety and depression, by my tendency to focus on the details at the expense of the big picture, and by hunger circuits gone awry. The overwhelming amount of misinformation about eating disorders?what they are and what causes them?drove me to write my latest book, Decoding Anorexia: How Breakthroughs in Science Offer Hope for Eating Disorders.?

Efforts to fight eating disorders still target cultural phenomena, especially images of overly thin, digitally altered models. Last month, the Academy for Eating Disorders and the Binge Eating Disorders Association ?issued a press release condemning the high-end department store Barneys for giving beloved Disney characters a makeover. Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck were stretched like taffy to appear emaciated in honor of Barneys' holiday ad campaign. The eating disorders groups wrote (PDF):

Viewership of such images is associated with low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction in young girls and women, placing them at risk for development of body image disturbances and eating disorders. These conditions can have devastating psychological as well as medical consequences. This campaign runs counter to efforts across the globe to improve both the health of runway models and the representation of body image by the fashion industry.

All of which is technically true. But when you look at the research literature, several studies indicate that environmental factors such as emaciated models are actually a minor factor in what puts people at risk of an eating disorder. A 2000 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that about 60 percent (and up to 85 percent) of a person's risk for developing anorexia was due to genetics. A 2006 follow-up study in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that only 5 percent of a person's risk of developing anorexia came from shared environmental factors like models and magazine culture. A far greater environmental risk (which the study estimated constituted 35 percent of someone?s risk of anorexia) came from what researchers call non-shared environmental factors, which are unique to each individual, such as being bullied on the playground or being infected with a bacterium like Streptococcus. (Several very small studies have linked the sudden onset of anorexia and obsessive-compulsive symptoms to an autoimmune reaction to strep infections.)

Eating disorders existed long before the advent of supermodels. Researchers believe the "starving saints" of the Middle Ages, like Catherine of Siena, had anorexia. Reports from ancient history indicate that wealthy Romans would force themselves to vomit during feasts, to make room in their stomachs for yet another course. In modern times, anorexia has been reported in rural Africa and in Amish and Mennonite communities, none of which are inundated with images of overly thin women. Nor does culture explain the fact that all Americans are bombarded with these images but only a very tiny portion ever develop a clinical eating disorder.

Frankly, I think the Barney's creation of Skinny Minnie and her newly svelte compatriots is ridiculous. They look absurd and freakish. I think we should be aware of and speak out against the thin body ideal, the sexualization of children, and the use of digitally altered images in advertising. I think we should do this regardless of the link to eating disorders. My objection to the AED and BEDA?s response is that it reinforces an "I wanna look like a model" model for how we think of eating disorders. It implies that eating disorders are seen as issues for white, upper-class women, which means that these life-threatening disorders often go undetected and untreated in men, the poor, and minorities.

Closing costs can vary for those buying commercial properties | Zoliath

Commercial property sales have many closing costs.

Commercial property managers buying or selling property will need to deal with closing costs, and these issues can be complicated, according to industry expert Daniel Doran.

When purchasing a property, it is necessary for both parties to negotiate a deal, which involves not only the building itself, but also financial hurdles to climb. However, everything can be discussed during this process. Contracts need to specify certain closing expenses such as settlements, surveys and any other insurance-related fees, Doran wrote in an article for RealtyBizNews.com.

There is a piece of legislation ? the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act ? that restricts smaller commercial real estate properties from being subject to unspecified fees at the time of closing. However, Doran explained that anything larger than four residential units will not have this protection.

Who needs to pay the fees?
With each side taking their part to ensure they have all of the sales issues ironed out, it is necessary to know that there is a list of payments each side should be covering, according to Doran. Sellers typically deal with the title insurance policy costs, while they also take care of the costs that would make the title more easily transferrable at the time of the sale.

The American Land Title Association survey would be completed before any lending was underway at a property, he said. These surveys can be expensive, costing at least $800. All taxes at the local level are taken care of by the seller, which includes title fees related to deed stamps. Additionally, Uniform Commercial Code searches are covered in this way, as well.

The buyer is not exempt from fees, by any stretch. Many permits need to be acquired by the property buyer, which can be for business licensing, or simply operations, according to Doran. An environmental study will need to be scheduled for the property, which is the responsibility of the buyer, as well.

Other property inspections will be paid for in this way, which allow the business to know that it can operate there safely, he added. Any further surveying will also need to be completed, especially when dealing with a flood search or topographics. Finally, financing the paperwork and administrative fees is this party's responsibility, as well. This includes mortgages, closing fees and the deed.

It?s Official: Digsby, Owned By Social Network Tagged, Is Now Open Source And Living On GitHub

digsby screensA new chapter today for Digsby, the social/instant messaging client bought by social network Tagged in April 2011 and effectively put into an idle state soon after: it has now been taken open source, with its code now living on GitHub. The intention to make Digsby open source was first announced in July of this year, but TechCrunch understands that it's only been in the last day that the source code has been completely migrated.

Super-comet or super-dud? Stay tuned

E. Guido / G. Sostero / N. Howes

The crosshairs at the center of this false-color image highlight Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON), which has the potential of becoming as bright or brighter than the full moon in late 2013. Right now, its brightness in the constellation Cancer is around magnitude 18, which would require a 16- to 20-inch telescope for sighting.

By Alan Boyle

A new comet superstar named C/2012 S1 (ISON) is heading for the spotlight starting in November 2013???but will it perform as some hope it will, or will it be a dud of cosmic proportions?

"This is one to watch, definitely," said Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory who monitors comets for the NASA-supported Sungrazer Comet Project. "But the astronomy community in general tries not to overhype these things. Potentially it will be amazing. Potentially it will be a huge dud."

Comet ISON quickly rose to the top of the charts after its discovery, which was based on imagery collected on Friday by the International Scientific Optical Network's 16-inch (0.4-meter) Santel reflecting telescope in Russia. The comet, which was described in an IAU circular?on Monday, takes its common name from the network's acronym. Since the discovery, astronomers have gone back through their files to find "pre-discovery" images and calculate the comet's orbit.

That orbit is due to bring Comet ISON incredibly close to the sun ? within just 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) in late November of next year. As a result, current projections suggest it could get very bright. How bright? Various estimates have set the brightest magnitude at -10 to -16. That suggests the comet could become brighter than the full moon?? which led Astronomy Magazine's Michael E. Bakich to say it "probably will become the brightest comet anyone alive has ever seen."

Over the next year, you're going to hear a lot of comparisons to stunners of the past, as long ago as the Great Comet of 1680?and as recent as the Great Comet of 2007. You'll also hear comparisons to past letdowns, ranging from Comet Kohoutek to Comet Elenin. You may also hear a fresh wave of doomsday talk, like the ridiculous rumblings that accompanied Elenin's approach.

Don't believe anything you hear about a comet catastrophe ? and don't get your hopes up just yet for a comet extravaganza. But do make plans to keep an eye on the sky in late 2013.

Battams said a lot depends on Comet ISON's composition. "It could turn into a huge letdown if it's a comet that's just too fragile and dissipates as it makes its way into the inner solar system," he told me. That's basically what happened to Comet Elenin. Because ISON appears to be a "new" comet coming in from the far-flung Oort cloud, it's tough to predict how the comet will behave.

The comet is currently in the constellation Cancer, as indicated in this star chart from Astronomy Magazine. When the comet hits prime time, a year from now, it should be heading through the constellation Virgo and visible from northern latitudes before sunrise. Here's a night-sky animation from the Remanzacco Observatory that shows how things are likely to go down.?

During the months ahead, astronomers of all stripes will be keeping a watch on Comet ISON and refining their expectations. "I would imagine that by next summer, we should have a much better handle on it," Battams said. In the meantime, check out the chatter on SpaceWeather.com, the Remanzacco Observatory's comet blog and the Comets Mailing List. (And on Twitter, keep an eye on @SungrazerComets.)?

Today's Big Immigration Stories

Rep. Tom Tancredo has a good op-ed with a reminder of why small provisions of the immigration law with give-aways are sometimes the hardest to eliminate. Recently, the House failed to pass a measure that would have eliminated the diversity lottery in favor of a program for post-graduate foreign students.

High Majority of Ohio Voters Say Immigration Issue Important in Election

In a voter survey by the Washington Post, 20 percent of voters in Ohio who were surveyed said immigration was extremely important in the election, and another 31 percent said it was very important.

Legal Workers Move to Alabama After Law Takes Effect

?Esene Manga, an Eritrean refugee living in Atlanta, hadn?t heard of Albertville, Alabama until a recruiter offered him a job there. Now Manga, 22, earns $10.85 an hour cutting chicken breasts on a poultry-plant night shift, an unexpected beneficiary of a year-old law designed to drive out illegal Hispanic immigrants,? BusinessWeek reports.

?This isn?t what the law?s backers said would happen. Republican state Senator Scott Beason, a sponsor, said at a news conference last year that the restrictions on undocumented workers would ?put thousands of native Alabamians back in the work force? [. . .] Plants sought refugees because too few local residents were interested or qualified, said Frank Singleton, a spokesman for Wayne Farms, based in Oakwood, Georgia.?

Democrats? Pre-Emptive Excuse for Low Hispanic Turnout Takes Shape

?Leaders of the U.S. immigrant community said they are concerned about the possible demobilization of the Latino vote in the November election. ?If you don?t go vote, use your voice in the democracy, it means that you have lost hope and are voluntarily giving up your political power,? Joshua Hoyt, co-president of the National Partnership for New Americans, told Efe on Monday.
Hoyt is among some 800 experts, activists and community leaders gathering in Baltimore this week for the National Immigrant Integration Conference 2012.?

Tancredo ? Time to End the Diversity Lottery

?Currently, America accepts over one million permanent legal immigrants and nearly as many temporary workers each year. Most of these immigrants are not selected based upon their skills or what they will contribute to this country, but through the process of family reunification. I suspect that many who claim that immigration is complicated do so because they know that if the issue were to presented to the American people with simple facts, they would demand that immigration be reprioritized and reduced,? says former Rep. Tom Tancredo in an op-ed.

Glazer's Takes First Step Toward Global Growth With Joint Venture ...

September 24, 2012

Texas-based distributor Glazer?s Inc. has formed a joint venture with USVI-based Premier Wines and Spirits to distribute beer, wine and spirits in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The new venture, to be called Glazer?s Premier Distributors LLC, combines Premier?s assets and operations with a financial investment from Glazer?s. Terms of the deal weren?t disclosed, but Glazer?s will be the controlling partner.

Premier, which has operations in St. Thomas and St. Croix, distributes brands from Pernod Ricard, Miller, Beam, Campari, Patr?n, Imperial Brands, Serrall?s, Sidney Frank, Constellation and also handles Red Bull. It?s owned by Ed McDonnell, former president and CEO of the Seagram Spirits & Wine Group, along with his son Paul, who serves as director of operations. Albert Paiewonsky is Premier?s CEO.

Shanken News Daily interviewed Glazer?s president and CEO Shelly Stein, COO Rob Swartz and chairman Bennett Glazer, about Glazer?s new plans for expansion.

SND: How did this deal in the USVI come about, and how long was it in the works?

Stein: About six or seven months ago, I got a call from someone who knows Ed McDonnell well, and that person suggested that I contact him. I soon met with Ed and his son Paul, and we started looking into the possibility of doing a deal. We met a number of times over the past six months and eventually were able to reach an agreement.

SND: Is it mainly the hotels and tourism trade you?ll be focused on with this deal?

Stein: Premier handles all the resorts and hotels, but it?s a very broad-based operation. So it?s a strategy that will be developed with the management team. But we will look to expand our footprint in the islands, while also expanding the portfolio. One example of the value that we?ll bring to the table is that in three weeks, our training staff and corporate accounts teams will be on the islands working with the major venues and properties to secure wine and drinks lists for the season.

SND: Glazer?s has set a corporate goal of reaching $10 billion in sales by 2020. How do you foresee getting there?

Stein: We?ll do that by achieving continued organic growth, by expanding our presence in the U.S., and we?ll also be looking internationally. All our suppliers are global producers. Their products are sold around the world, so why should we be only in the U.S.? We now have a management team that has done many international deals, so there?s a comfort level at Glazer?s in terms of our ability to make those types of transactions. For companies without experience in this area, it can be very difficult. So we have an advantage?and we have no doubt that we?ll expand our footprint both in the U.S. and globally. This deal with Premier is just the first step in our drive to become a distribution player in the global market.

SND: You?re probably the first of the major U.S. distributors to look at things this way.

Stein: (Some distributors) have made exploratory efforts, but if you go into markets that aren?t at the proper business and legal level, you can get hurt. You have to be careful, and every country is different. You need to spend a lot of time, money and effort on figuring out how things work in the markets where you?re looking.

Swartz: Our model is to partner with local players, so it?s critical to find the right partner?someone who understands our industry as well as the uniqueness of their particular market. And as Shelly said, it takes a good bit of time to get to know someone and get into a contractual relationship for the long run.

Stein: We?ve visited and focused on certain markets in South America, for example, and people really want to get to know you before forming a partnership. It can almost be like becoming part of their extended family. But we?ll be in a number of such markets. I can?t say exactly when, because these deals take much more time than in the U.S.

SND: And what you offer overseas is essentially the same expertise you offer in the U.S.?

Stein: We offer a very strong balance sheet and we offer relationships, since we handle virtually every major supplier. So we bring capital, we bring relationships, and we bring expertise. That?s attractive to potential partners. A major Argentine distributor recently visited one of our facilities and said we were 50 years ahead of them. We?ve probably spent about $70 million on technology upgrades. We just rolled out SAP in our first state, so we?re allocating a tremendous amount to technology and facilities. I?m not aware of anyone else in the industry who?s doing it to the level that we are.

Swartz: Sometimes it?s difficult for suppliers to really know what?s going on. With our technology, we can tell them where the product?s going, what?s happening with it, how the brands are being built.

Stein: And our major suppliers have been very supportive and encouraging about our expansion plans. Some have said that wherever we go, they?ll be with us. So it?s a very exciting time, because we feel like we?re in on the ground floor.

A second part of this interview with Glazer?s executives will run in tomorrow?s SND.

DNP Sony announces new external batteries for smartphones and tablets

Sony announced on Monday that it will introduce a new line of external batteries for smartphones and tablets. Shipping in capacities of 3,500 to 7,000mAh, these external juice boxes weigh around 198 grams and measure 130.6mm by 12.9mm, making them about the size of a modern smartphone. Charging devices via USB, Sony claims that these portable pick me ups can be recharged up to 500 times and can charge most smartphones in an hour and a half. If toting another smartphone-like device around doesn't sound ideal to you, Sony will also be releasing smaller "stick-type" (think flash drives) external batteries in assorted colors. Both battery types are set to launch this fall, with prices ranging from 2,300 yen ($30) to 7,000 yen ($90). Wouldn't it just be easier to sell a marginally thicker phone with world-class battery life? A boy can dream...

Small Business: 5 Steps To Build Your Twitter From The Ground Up ...

I?ve found a few common themes among small business owners and their perception of social media. Typically, their excuse for little to no online presence revolves around one or all of the following:

  • A lack of time.
  • Fear based in the overwhelming nature of social media.
  • The inability to get their account off the ground without advertising.

A majority of the time, small businesses end up hiring a consultant to help manage their social media because they can?t get past the two first problems. This post is designed to help the business owners who want to take a crack at it themselves!

Step #1 - Make Your Profile Attractive

Though this sounds relatively obvious, many small business owners skip over the ?design? function in the settings of Twitter. It is crucial that your Twitter brand follows suit with your brand outside of social media. Utilize your ability to change the background, header, and link color to match the images, media, and colors your business regularly associates with. It?s also important to consider the fact that the goal is to get visitors to scroll through your tweets and potentially engage, so make sure everything is easy on the eyes and inviting.?

Step #2 - Tweet With Purpose

People often forget that you need to provide your followers with something they can consume. As a small business you need to rarely tweet about your product. For example, if you look at Gatorade?s Twitter feed you will see tweets referencing relevant information about sports, training, and their athletes. This is a perfect model to build your new social brand. Users will engage and follow if your tweets can make their day better!

Step #3 - Mention Other Brands And People

When starting out with basically nothing, but a few random auto-follows, it can be a little intimidating to jump into conversations or fire off tweets that no one will most likely see. Don?t be afraid to get in the mix! Do some research as to what brands and people in your industry actually engage with users. There are many Twitter top dogs who regularly engage with people that mention them or ask them questions. This is huge when you?re starting out. Obviously if you?re still in business it?s because you specialize in something that people care about. Use your knowledge and experience to get involved in conversations, treating the space similarly to an online forum. For every mention or retweet you get from a big user your Twitter?s stock grows immediately.

Step #4 - Use #Hashtags? But In The Right Way

Most companies and active Twitter users create search streams that they check regularly based on certain hashtags they follow. It?s easy to find out what hashtags are used most commonly on Twitter. Search terms that are associated with your business and take a look down the results to see what hashtags seem to pop up more often. Mix it up and send tweets with a variety of hashtags to get your tweets in front of a variety of audiences that may be interested in your profile.

I say use hastags in the right way for one specific reason. Please don?t include them in the middle of your tweet! It makes it harder to read message and users are likely to get annoyed or simply skip over your tweet. You can put as many hashtags in a tweet as long as they are after the actual text and link you post.?

Step #5 - Alert Your Customers

Make a banner at your store and tell your customers your active on Twitter. You can even create an incentive for your customers to follow you and engage. Offer discounts and promotions that they can only redeem on Twitter. Not only does this drive people to your account, but it also gives your customers a positive feeling to associate with your Twitter brand.

The Hobbit, a Feature Length Movie Made by London Schoolboys

Suck it, Peter Jackson! A team of schoolboys from Tower House prep in southwest London have released their own feature-length version of The Hobbit:

Seventy boys aged eight to 13 from Tower House School star in their own feature-length version of Tolkien?s classic, which includes battle scenes and even a CGI dragon.

The 90-minute movie, filmed at locations around the country, was put together ?on a shoestring? and required some of its young actors to spend hours in make-up being fitted with fake scars and prosthetic noses. [...]

Paul Geary, head of drama at the school in East Sheen and the film?s director, said: ?The boys showed great dedication to this project which shows the quality of drama that a school can produce.

"It was our ambition to do something totally unique, something no other school has ever done. As far as I am aware we are the first prep school to do a full feature-length film.?

Greenlight Roundup 2 | Video Game Blog, Video Games Reviews ...

One computer failure too many has set this week?s roundup back a day, but nonetheless it arrives!

Compulsion Games are not the first developers to put a platformer like?Contrast?up on Greenlight. Black Forest Games??Project Giana?is somewhat similar in that both of these games are surreal platformer titles in which the player switches between two?different?aspects of the game world (the trailers for each are at the bottom), however the reason I am talking about?Contrast now?and didn?t talk about?Giana last week?is because the former seems to be more focused on telling a story with its gameplay and the challenge is actually ingrained in the levels? designs, while in the latter the gameplay is focused more on getting every crystal-point-whatsit on the stage, and the levels would otherwise be rather simplistic.

What you see in?Giana?s?trailer is literally a scaled down version of the entire first stage (as a video by Black Forest Games revealed), and it appears to rife with repetitive motions like the?Super Mario Galaxy?mid-air spin move. On the other hand, just look at all the nifty mechanics that reside in the teased stages of?Contrast; everything in it seems to contribute to the mood in substantial ways, and as far as platformers go, it seems to be a rather unique and enjoyable experience. Not to put?Project Giana?down, though, as both of these games seem delightful, but?Giana?seems geared more towards those willing to grind for every last hidden point- an audience that is substantially smaller than that of the fun-loving, intriguing world of?mystique?within?Contrast,?which has earned the up-vote of approval from?Greenlight Roundup.

It would take a smarter man than me to accurately describe this game, but it is nothing short of amazing. From the videos that are available of this game, it seems to mix some well designed platforming maps with strategic TBS combat, in the form of?aerial?drones,?controlled?by the player, able to move at varying speeds and carrying?specialized?weapons to present the player with a very wide number of unique strategies to explore. The game presents the potential to?emulate?much of what made?StarCraft?so popular back in the 90?s, but it doesn?t just copy the old ways; Kiritsu Games??Band of Drones takes?full advantage of its hybrid origins, integrating item pick-ups dropped by enemies, making heavy use of the game?s physics engine in combat, and?limiting?the player to a select few drones, rather than an entire army to make every small loss more significant.

In addition to its gameplay potential, the UI is highly customizable, and I personally adore the promise of an included level editor and a scenario-based campaign. However I get the biggest kick out of this: it is one of the very few games on Greenlight to feature Linux support. If you?re anything like me, you have been pining for Steam on Linux for quite some time, but my concern has always been a lack of good games supported on the OS. Sure source games will be there, eventually, but right off the bat, the Linux audience can look forward to this masterpiece, provided others follow in ?our footsteps and give this nifty creation a well-deserved up-vote.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A breeze of momentum on his side, President Barack Obama is moving to shore up support in a key state while he and rival Mitt Romney spar over how to transform a bitterly divided political culture and how to best ensure the financial and health security of older Americans.

Obama is traveling Saturday to Wisconsin, a state that his campaign had considered safely in his column but which Obama aides seem eager to fortify in case Romney's running mate, Wisconsin native and congressman Paul Ryan, can erode the president's support.

Romney, faced with second-guessing within his own party over his strategy, is staying away from swing states Saturday and raising money in California. On Sunday, he's set to campaign in Colorado, where polls show Obama holds a narrow lead.

Apple seeks additional $707 million, permanent injunctions in patent case against Samsung

In a court filing late Friday night Apple has requested the court enhance the $1.05 billion in damages a jury awarded it from Samsung for their patent lawsuit in California. FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller has a breakdown of the figures, revealing that Apple has chosen to seek enhancement just on what the jury deemed "willful" patent infringement to the tune of $135 million (less than the 3x amount it could have pursued) plus an additional $400 million for infringement of trade dress. That adds up to $1,756,455,218 it's now seeking from Samsung, plus, as Reuters reporter Dan Levine notes, the expected request for permanent injunctions. That could cover more than the products mentioned in the lawsuit, as Mueller also points out Apple is asking for an injunction against other products with similar features, which could extend to devices like the Galaxy S III. As usual, it's all still far from over and the figures could change, but Samsung is probably just hoping Apple's lawyers use iOS 6 Maps for their next trip to the courtroom.

Update: Per FOSS Patents, adding in interest and supplemental damages Apple's total request is now a tidy $707 million.
